Kuching, Sarawak – September 3, 2023 – VaazMe had the honour of participating in the Jelajah Antiscam Kebangsaan 2023 event held in Kuching, Sarawak last weekend. This event primarily focuses on educating users on the latest modus operandi of scams and cyber threats as well as sharing guides to avoid becoming the next victims.
In today’s digital landscape, online scams are becoming increasingly prevalent with the perpetrators often operating behind false identities. It has become a pressing issue not only globally but also locally. The Sarawak Commercial Crime Investigation Department (JSJK) recorded a total of 2,651 cases of fraud, breach of trust, cybercrime, and forgery that resulted in an accumulated loss of RM63.7 million in 2022 alone. Among the recorded cases were 453 online fraud cases (RM2.5 million), 252 job offer fraud cases (RM2.9 million), and 183 cases of impersonation (RM4.2 million).
However, up to July 2023, Sarawak has reported RM49.3 million in losses for online scams, compared to RM24.7 million within the same period in 2022 — an increase of RM24.6 mil or 99.56%.
